Marjorie Taylor Greene called Parkland shooting a ‘false flag’

Rep. Marjorie Taylor Greene described the Parkland high school shooting that left 17 dead as a ‘false flag’ event in a resurfaced Facebook post from 2018.

The QAnon-supporting Congresswoman, who was elected in November, claimed the shooting was a ‘false flag’ event, meaning it was either faked or planned by someone besides the gunman in a bid to remove people’s right to arms.

The shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School in Florida in February 2018 left 17 dead, 17 injured and was the fourth deadliest school shooting in US history.

In the post, uncovered by Media Matters, she criticized former Broward County Sheriff’s Deputy Scot Peterson who was fired for his inaction in responding to the shooting and received a pension after leaving the department.

A person commented on the post saying the pension was ‘a pay off to keep his mouth shut since it was a false flag planned shooting’ and Greene responded with, ‘Exactly.’

Another person commented on the pension: 'Kick back for going along with the evil plan. You know it’s not for doing a good job.' Greene replied 'My thoughts exactly!! Paid to do what he did and keep his mouth shut!'

This conspiracy theory that the shooting was an orchestrated event with an anti-gun agenda has circulated in right-wing circles.

Peterson, the school resource officer at the time, has been criticized for failing to enter the school building when shots were fired and hiding for 45 minutes while police searched for the gunman.

In a separate Facebook post in 2018 Greene claimed: ‘I am told that Nancy Pelosi tells Hillary Clinton several times a month that “we need another school shooting” in order to persuade the public to want strict gun control.’

The Parkland shooting prompted new efforts to pass gun control measures, with students leading the activism effort.

In 2019 before she was elected to Congress she heckled Parkland survivor and activist David Hogg.

Greene is a controversial new member of Congress and is an outspoken supporter of the QAnon conspiracy.

Over the weekend she was banned from Twitter for 12 hours for falsely claiming the Georgia Senate elections were rigged.

On Tuesday she shared a lengthy speech on Twitter advocating for guns in schools saying: ‘”Gun-free” school zones are a FAILURE. Laws that prevent legal ownership of firearms turn schools into targets.’

‘As someone who was personally locked in a classroom in 11th grade due to a fellow student who brought guns to our “gun-free” school intent to kill others, I’m proud to say I’ll cosponsor the Safe Students Act to repeal “gun-free” school zone laws and allow Americans to protect our children,’ she wrote.

In that post she once again hit out at Scot Peterson, the cop on the scene during the Parkland shooting. 'Scot Peterson allowed children to be left defenseless against an active shooter. When he was supposed to protect them, he was a coward and refused to go in. ‘Why in the world would he receive such a lucrative pension after the tragic school shooting at Marjory Stoneman Douglas High School? It’s sickening,’ she said.

‘Our children are the most important people in our country and they should be protected by good guys with guns,’ she added.
