Schools will reopen to all pupils on March 8 having been closed, except for vulnerable children and children of key workers, since Jan 5 following the introduction of the third national lockdown.
Despite the usual rituals carried out by parents, checking whether uniforms still fit and packing school bags the night before, it won’t be an ordinary first day back at school.
Children in secondary school will be tested using lateral flow tests before they resume face-to-face classes. Secondary school children will also be required to wear face masks in schools, while some councils have advised that primary school pupils do the same.
The return to school also marks the end of homeschooling, which parents took up for the second time around.
