rystal Palace supporters have come together to raise more than £11,000 for local causes across 2020.
With supporters shut out of stadiums for most of the year, Palace’s famous Holmesdale Fanatics have spearheaded the efforts to unite fanzines, podcasts and international supporters’ groups in order to help those in need in south London.
Through a number of initiatives the WE ARE PALACE collective have raised £11,500 to support homeless people with donations and clothing, foodbanks and the Salvation Army’s children’s Christmas present appeal.
When football returned behind closed doors, Crystal Palace offered a banner to the Holmesdale Fanatics in their usual Block E spot to ensure they were represented. The decision was made by the Fanatics to instead use the banner to appeal for donations form those watching at home to a local foodbank and, along with fans boycotting the Premier League’s pay-per-view plans and giving that money to charity instead, raised £7000.
“Local community support has been at the heart of the Holmesdale Fanatics since 2005 and we’ve been keen to take that to the next level to help out those in our area most in need during what has been a difficult period for many,” said Micky Grafton from the Fanatics.
“Whilst we aren’t in the stadium, we are pleased to be able to put our numbers to use in this positive way.
“Palace is a great community club and this WE ARE PALACE supporters collective just highlights the best aspects of that community spirit.
“It’s a great chance to give back to the local area in a big way and support the brilliant work of these charities.
“The entire Palace fanbase has done itself proud during this period and raised over £11.5k for important local causes.
“We look forward to running more campaigns in the future through this collective as well as our usual work through the Fanatics.
“It makes you proud to see the positive impact our club has had on the lives of so many in our local area.”
