Why is a G20 summit 2023 invitation to India referred to by its Sanskrit name upsetting certain people?

The use of India’s Sanskrit name, Bharat, on dinner invitations has sparked a political tempest and sparked considerable debate regarding the country’s nomenclature, historical legacy, and colonial links. As New Delhi prepares to host international leaders for the highly anticipated G20 summit 2023 conference, this problem has come to the fore. The invitations, which bear the title “President of Bharat” rather than the traditional “President of India,” have aroused concerns about the multiple identities that exists inside a country of 1.4 billion people and over 20 official languages.

The Constitutional Foundation

The dual nomenclature is firmly established in the Indian constitution, which states that “India, that is Bharat, shall be a Union of States.” This clause acknowledges the historical and cultural significance of both the names India and Bharat. The two names are more than just linguistic variances; they indicate a deeper identity conflict inside the country.

The Linguistic Dichotomy

Bharat, a Sanskrit and Indian cultural heritage term, is also the Hindi word for India.  Both India and Bharat appear on Indian passports, representing the country’s complex character.

A Shift in International Representation

The use of “Bharat” rather than “India” on G20 summit invites signals a significant departure in India’s conventional worldwide image. On the world scene, Prime Minister Narendra Modi and his Hindu-nationalist Bharatiya Janata Party (BJP) have vigorously promoted “Bharat” as the principal name for the country.

Historical Perspective

The name “India” itself has historical roots, derived from ancient Western civilizations’ adaptation of the Sanskrit word for the Indus River, “Sindhu.” The British Empire later adopted this name.

Contemporary Relevance

The administration of Prime Minister Modi has taken a number of steps to disassociate the country from its colonial heritage. This involves renaming roads and structures with Mughal and colonial histories in India. The renaming of Rajpath to Kartavya Path, for example, was intended to remove any evidence of colonial influence.

Opposition and Debate

While the use of the word “Bharat” has gained popularity, opposition leaders are concerned. Some say that “India” has created a strong worldwide brand over centuries, and that abandoning it would be a mistake.
